Deaf Shelter Dog Never Leaves His Mat And Waits For His New Loving Family

He HAS TO have a blanket with him all the time!
When people visit the Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) shelter, they can’t help but notice Valcor, the 3-year-old pit bull mix because of how many blankets he has stacked up in his kennel.

Upon getting a closer look, they notice the kind and bright, blue eyes of the sweet dog who is always eager to give kisses.

The born- deaf dog was always affectionate of soft and fuzzy things but his love for blankets had increased further after his family surrendered him to AFV in Wildomar, California last month.

Valcor’s previous owner had informed the shelter about how he needs blankets near him at all times to suck on them. By following this instruction, the shelter staffers realised the dog didn’t need much to settle down.

“Since he doesn’t have his hearing, it seems that being swaddled in his blankets (which he does himself) is comforting to him,” Katie Menges, media manager of AFV, said. “He curls himself up in his blankets and sleeps like a baby until someone touches him or he decides he wants some play time.”

Valcor’s previous owners had surrendered him because they just had a baby and he was getting over-protective of his sibling, leading to territorial issues with the other dogs. But, after he spent some time in the shelter, staffers came to know he got along well with both kids and other dogs.

“When we brought in different dogs for him to interact with for a ‘dog test’ he did really well,” Menges said. “He does make some funny noises that the other dogs don’t really understand, but that is also very common for deaf pets.”

However, he has a favourite time in the week and it is when a few elementary kids come to practice their reading with the shelter dogs. It is always evident how much he lights up upon the kids’ arrival. Menges says,“He lights up completely when children are around and loves to give them kisses.”

Staffers in the shelter would be glad if Valcor found a loving home, preferably with kids who can help him build his self-confidence. “He seems to understand the hand motions for ‘sit’ and ‘come here,’” Menges said. “So a family that is ready to learn sign language and a way to communicate with this sweet boy who can’t hear would be perfect!”

However, it is of utmost importance that his family provides him with what he loves the most—blankets!
